At the end of the 90s many medical professionals were chatting about their experiences of taking Viagra (or its generic equivalent, sildenafil, which is used to treat erectile dysfunction).
For some men, the news of a new medicine could be the last thing they thought of. Not so for others. Last year, PDE5i (sildenafil citrate) was the most popular treatment for angina (chest pain) and hypertension (high blood pressure).
Last year, the same group of scientists published an open-access version of a journal called, which they hope will encourage more people to take sildenafil. In it, they show how sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, can help men achieve and maintain an erection.
“We hope this will encourage more people to take Viagra,” says, a urologist at the Royal Children’s Hospital Royal Freehouse in Belfast, Ireland. “But the big question is why?”
Sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, is part of a group of medicines called phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors (PDE5Is). PDE5Is are drugs that relax muscles in the walls of blood vessels and increase blood flow to certain areas of the body. They work by preventing the action of a chemical called cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP), which relaxes smooth muscle cells in blood vessels.
“The PDE5Is relax the blood vessels, increase blood flow to specific areas of the body,” explains, a urologist at the Royal Freehouse hospital. “They increase the relaxation of smooth muscle cells and the dilation of blood vessels, which can help men achieve and maintain an erection.”
Sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, is a PDE5I, which means it blocks PDE5 from being taken in the body. PDE5Is work by blocking an enzyme called phosphodiesterase type 5. The enzyme is responsible for the relaxation of blood vessels, which allows the smooth muscles in the penis to widen and increase blood flow.
Sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, works by relaxing blood vessels in the penis and allowing blood to flow into the penis when the man is sexually excited. When the man is sexually stimulated, their blood flow to the penis increases. Sildenafil does not work for erectile dysfunction, but can help men achieve and sustain erections when they are aroused.
In clinical trials, PDE5Is were shown to increase blood flow to the penis when taken in combination with an SSRI, such as Viagra Connect. In these clinical trials, patients taking PDE5Is were asked to use Viagra Connect for up to 90 minutes prior to sexual activity.
Sildenafil (the generic name for Viagra), which works by relaxing blood vessels, is the brand name for sildenafil citrate, the generic name for the drug Viagra.
Researchers are not sure how well Viagra (sildenafil) works in the body. However, researchers from around the world have found that PDE5Is relax blood vessels in the penis. They have shown that when the medication is taken in combination with an SSRI, the relaxes the blood vessels.
“It was previously thought that PDE5Is relax blood vessels, but that is becoming less and less of a research topic,” says Dr Sean O’Driscoll, chief executive of the. “PDE5Is can help men achieve and maintain erections when they are sexually stimulated. We hope that this open-access version of PDE5Is will encourage more people to take Viagra.”
Dr O’Driscoll says that as a urologist, he treats erectile dysfunction.
“The research showed that PDE5Is can relax blood vessels in the penis when the medication is taken in combination with an SSRI. There is also a small but significant increase in blood flow to the penis when taken in the context of sexual activity,” he says. “It was previously thought that PDE5Is relax blood vessels, but that is becoming less of a research topic. We hope this open-access version of PDE5Is will encourage more people to take Viagra.”
Dr O’Driscoll says that erectile dysfunction can have a number of causes, but that it can be a combination of factors including age, medical history, and lifestyle.

A new treatment for that can work within 10 minutes has launched in the UK.
It is a gel called Eroxon, and has been clinically proven to work for people with mild to severe erectile dysfunction.
Eroxon is made by Futura Medical, a pharmaceutical company based in the UK.
Eroxon is applied to the head of the penis, where the gel evaporates, with this evaporation stimulates vascular and neural nerve endings by rapidly cooling and warming the area. This triggers the release of nitric oxide, which relaxes blood vessels, therefore increasing blood flow to the penis and causing an erection.
The release of nitric oxide is also how other erectile dysfunction (ED) treatments such as Viagra work, but they have the disadvantage of relaxing blood vessels in the entire body, since they are taken orally and not applied directly. This can lead to side effects such as nausea, dizziness and headaches.
These side effects mean people with pre-existing health conditions, such as heart and liver disease, cannot take oral ED pills. They are also not safe for people who have recently had a stroke, and cannot be taken with some prescription medicines.
Dr Hilary Jones, who regularly appears as a health expert on ITV, told: “The word ‘breakthrough’ is often used in health headlines, but new treatments which are truly groundbreaking come along far less frequently. Eroxon is an innovative therapy which has the potential to change the lives of millions of men with erectile dysfunction.”
Dr Catherine Hood, a sexual health specialist, added: “When they were launched back in the 90s, PDE5i medicines were a game-changer, but they are not an option for many men due to pre-existing health conditions, interactions with their prescription medicines or simply because of the time they take to work.”
In a 12-week clinical trial of 250 people, two out of three reported a significant improvement in their ability to achieve and maintain an erection. The figure rose to 80 per cent for those with severe erectile dysfuncion.
The gel is available over the counter, without a prescription. Eroxon costs £24.99 for a pack of four single-use tubes, and is available from Boots stores and online.

Eroxon will be prescribed to people who have severe erectile dysfunction, and is available in four easy-to-swallow (single-use) single-use tubes. Each tube has two small size 2.5mm and 1.5mm hard inner tube sizes.
Boots and Goodlan will put two tubes in the first place, with the addition of an inner hard inner tube size of 1.5mm.
